Should I get the iPhone 17 or the iPhone 16 Pro?

I was planning to upgrade my phone and thought I had settled on the iPhone 16 Pro, but now the iPhone 17 has me second-guessing everything. I need help figuring out which one offers better value, performance, camera quality, and battery life for everyday use before I spend the money.

If the price gap is small, I’d take the 16 Pro.

Why. The Pro model usually wins on the stuff you notice every day. Better display tech, extra camera lens, higher sustained performance, and premium build. If you shoot zoom photos or video, the telephoto matters. The base 17 might get a newer chip, sure, but for most people the speed diff in apps, texts, maps, and socials will feel tiny.

Value comes down to your use:
16 Pro:

  • Better camera system, esp zoom and ProRAW or ProRes stuff
  • 120Hz ProMotion, which you notice fast
  • More ‘pro’ features now, no guesswork

17:

  • Newer model, longer software support by about a year
  • Possible battery or efficiency gains
  • Lower entry price, depending on storage

If you keep phones 4 to 5 years, the 17 has a small edge on lifespan. If you care about camera quality and screen smoothness today, 16 Pro is the safer buy. I’d pick the 16 Pro unless the 17 is way cheaper or brings a big feature you know you’ll use. The base models are fine, but the Pro line tends to age bettr.

I’d actually split from @chasseurdetoiles a bit on the “just get the 16 Pro if the gap is small” take. That only makes sense if you know you care about the Pro extras.

If you mostly do normal phone stuff, pics of friends/pets/food, some video, streaming, texting, maps, then the iPhone 17 is probably the smarter buy. Newer design cycle, likely better battery efficiency, and one extra year of updates does matter more than people pretend. Future-you will care about that.

Where the 16 Pro still wins is if you’re picky. 120Hz screen, telephoto lens, more premium feel, better sustained camera flexibility. If you zoom a lot or notice display smoothness instantly, yeah, the Pro is hard to walk away from.

My short version:

  • iPhone 17 = better long-term value
  • iPhone 16 Pro = better “nice to use every single day” value

So: if you upgrade often, 16 Pro. If you keep phones forever and want the safer buy finacially, 17. I probly wouldn’t overthink raw performance, both will be fast as heck.
