My iPhone photo library is full of duplicate pictures after syncing and restoring, and it’s getting hard to free up storage or keep things organized. I need a better way to merge duplicate photos on iPhone without losing important images, albums, or metadata.
I’d start with the built-in Apple option before doing anything else.
Open Photos, scroll to Utilities, or Collections > Utilities on newer iOS versions, then open Duplicates. Hit Select, then Select All, then Merge. iPhone keeps one version, pulls together the available metadata, and sends the extra copies to Recently Deleted.
One small gotcha I ran into. If you imported a big batch of photos, the Duplicates section might look empty for a while. iOS scans in the background, so it sometimes takes a few hours before everything shows up.
Where Apple’s tool falls short is with near-matches. It handles exact duplicate files. It does not catch stuff like:
- Three shots of the same thing taken two seconds apart
- Burst photos
- Multiple tries with tiny framing changes
- Similar photos saved from chats or edits
Those are separate files, so they never land in the Duplicates album.
For that reason, I ended up using Clever Cleaner more often. What stood out for me was simple. It finds both exact duplicates and lookalike photos. That matters more in normal use, at least from what I saw. It groups related shots, picks a likely best image, and still lets you check things before anything gets removed.
The steps are short:
- Install Clever Cleaner from the App Store
- Give it access to scan your library
- Open the Similars section
- Use Smart Cleanup, or go group by group yourself
- Put back anything you want to keep
- Confirm the cleanup
- Empty Recently Deleted in Photos if you want storage back right away
I kept using a few other parts of it too, mostly because they saved me from poking around manually:
- Heavies puts the biggest photos and videos up front
- Video Compression shrinks large videos without deleting them
- Screenshots helps clear old screenshot piles in bulk
- Lives turns Live Photos into still images
- Swipe gives you a fast left or right review flow through the library
If you want to skip third-party apps, there are still a few decent manual routes:
- Use Search inside Photos to narrow things down by person, place, event, or object, then delete similar shots yourself
- Check Burst albums and keep the best frame
- On a Mac, Photos Smart Albums make manual sorting easier when you’re hunting similar images
- Look at Recently Deleted after you finish, becuse those files still take up space until you clear them
So, for exact duplicates, Apple’s merge tool works fine. If your mess is mostly near-identical shots, which mine was, something built to spot similar images saves a lot more time.

I’d split this into two problems. True duplicates, and clutter from near-duplicates.
@mikeappsreviewer covered the Apple merge feature, so I won’t rehash it. I will say this though, after a sync or restore, I don’t always trust auto-merge right away. I like to wait until iCloud Photos finishes syncing, then check photo counts on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac if you use more than one device. If counts are still jumping, hold off deleting stuff. Saves a lot of regret later.
What helped me more was this cleanup order:

Check Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Photos.
Make sure sync is done first. -
Sort your library by Recently Added.
Restores and imports often dump dupes in big batches. Those are easier to spot than hunting across 5 years of pics. -
Review edited copies.
A lot of “duplicates” are edited versions, HDR saves, portrait versions, or images saved from Messages. Those won’t always merge cleanly. -
Export first if the photos matter.
If you’ve got family pics or work images, copy them to a Mac, external drive, or cloud folder before bulk cleanup. Boring step, but worth it. -
Use a cleaner for the messy part.
Clever Cleaner is decent for this because it catches similar photos, not only exact matches. For people with full iPhone storage after restoring, that’s usually where the big savings are. Apple’s tool misses a lot of those.
One thing I disagree on a bit with @mikeappsreviewer. I would not rush to “Select All” on a huge library unless you already checked a few groups first. iOS merges well, but if your library has weird sync leftovers, screenshots with edits, or shared images, it’s smart to spot check. Takes 5 minutes.

One thing I’d add to what @mikeappsreviewer and @boswandelaar said: don’t treat this like only a “merge duplicates” job. After a sync/restore mess, it’s really an iPhone photo duplicate cleanup + storage recovery problem.
Apple’s duplicate merge is fine for obvious copies, sure. But I kinda disagree with relying on it too much if your library got scrambled by restore. Sometimes the bigger storage hog isn’t the exact dupes, it’s all the almost-identical junk that came along for the ride. Ten pics of the same cat, three edited exports, saved attachments, etc. Apple won’t magically clean that up.
What worked better for me was splitting the task like this:
- Let iCloud settle first
- Check library size in Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Photos
- Clean duplicates
- Then go after similars, large videos, screenshots
That last part is where Clever Cleaner actually helps more than Photos, imo. Not because Apple’s tool is bad, just because it’s limited. Clever Cleaner is better if you want to merge duplicate photos on iPhone without losing the best shot or spending your whole weekend doom-scrolling your camera roll.

Biggest tip: after deleting/merging, restart the phone once. Sounds dumb, but I’ve had storage not update right away until I did that. iOS can be weird like taht.
I’d add one angle the others barely touched: check whether the duplicates are actually coming from multiple sync sources. If you have iCloud Photos on, plus old Finder/iTunes sync folders, plus WhatsApp or Google Photos auto-save, “merging” only treats the symptom. New dupes can keep reappearing.
So before cleanup, verify:
- Photos syncing from only one main source
- Shared albums are not being re-saved to library
- Messaging apps are not auto-downloading images you already imported
- Google Photos, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. are not also backing up and re-adding stuff
I slightly disagree with the idea that near-duplicates should always be cleaned aggressively. Similar shots are often intentional. For kids, pets, travel, or receipts, auto-picking “the best” can be hit or miss. That’s where Clever Cleaner is useful, but I would use it more as a review tool than a blind-delete tool.

- Helps surface heavy files, screenshots, and clutter
Cons:
- Needs full photo access, which some people hate
