Need help choosing between the 4070 Super and 5070

I was set on buying the RTX 4070 Super, but now the RTX 5070 is making the decision harder. I mostly game at 1440p and want the best value, performance, and future-proofing without overspending. I need help figuring out which GPU makes more sense for my build.

If prices are close, I’d lean 5070. Newer card, better RT, better frame gen support, longer driver life. For 1440p, both are strong, so price matters more than specs on paper.

Simple rule.

If the 5070 is within about 10 to 15 percent of the 4070 Super, buy the 5070.
If the 4070 Super is cheaper by more than that, buy the 4070 Super.

Why:

  1. Raster at 1440p should be close.
  2. 5070 usually wins more in RT and newer features.
  3. Newer gen gives you a longer runway for upgrades and resale.

What I’d do:
4070 Super at a clear discount = take it.
5070 near the same price = take the newer card.

Also check PSU needs, cooler size, and local bundle deals. People forget that stuff and then get bit later.

I’d frame it less as “which card is newer” and more as “what kind of 1440p gamer are you?”

If you mostly play standard rasterized stuff, esports, single-player AAA without max RT, the 4070 Super is still kind of the sweet spot. It was already a very balanced 1440p card, and if you can get it for a meaningfully lower price, that matters more than people admit. A lot of “future-proofing” talk is just paying extra now to maybe feel better later.

Where I slightly differ from @himmelsjager is that I would not automatically value the 5070 higher just because it’s newer. Newer gen is nice, sure, but only if the actual street price makes sense in your area. Launch pricing and real pricing are not always the same thing, and that can make the 5070 look better on paper than in your cart.

What I’d check:

  • actual price after tax/shipping
  • VRAM amount and memory bandwidth, not just model number
  • noise/cooler quality on the exact AIB model
  • whether you care about ray tracing a lot, or just occasionally
  • if you upgrade every 2 to 3 years or hold cards forever

If you keep GPUs for 4 to 5 years, the 5070 is probly the safer buy if the premium is small. If you’re just trying to max value today, a discounted 4070 Super is hard to beat.

Short version:
4070 Super = smarter value buy
5070 = smarter “keep it longer” buy

At 1440p, neither is a bad choice tbh. The bad choice is overpaying because the number is bigger.

I’d actually push back a bit on the “5070 = safer long-term buy” angle people, including @himmelsjager, are leaning toward. Future-proofing only matters if the card is meaningfully faster in the games you play, not just newer on the box.

For 1440p, the real question is simple:

  • If the RTX 4070 Super is cheaper by a noticeable amount, buy it.
  • If the RTX 5070 is close in price, then the 5070 makes more sense.

That’s really it.

What I think gets overlooked:

  • driver maturity can favor the older card early on
  • a well-cooled 4070 Super AIB can be a better daily experience than a hot/loud newer model
  • power draw and PSU headroom matter if your system is already borderline

4070 Super pros

  • usually better value if discounted
  • already excellent at 1440p
  • mature ecosystem and tons of model reviews

4070 Super cons

  • less resale appeal over time
  • weaker “new gen” feature bragging rights
  • if pricing is too close, it stops being the smart pick

5070 pros

  • likely better longevity
  • stronger RT/upscaling path if that matters to you
  • newer architecture usually ages better feature-wise

5070 cons

  • early street prices can be dumb
  • launch hype tax
  • gains may feel small in regular raster gaming

My blunt take: for mostly 1440p raster gaming, don’t pay more than about 10 to 15 percent extra for the 5070. Above that, the 4070 Super is the smarter buy. If prices are nearly tied, skip the mental gymnastics and get the 5070.
