My iPhone isn’t detecting similar photos in the Photos app, even though I have a lot of near-duplicate pictures that should show up. I’ve updated iOS, left the phone charging, and waited, but nothing appears. I need help figuring out what I’m missing and how to get similar photos to show on my iPhone.
I started with Apple Photos, and I got annoyed fast. It sorts your library in a few useful ways, sure, but it does not group lookalike shots well. If you snapped five versions of the same thing, you still end up hunting through the library by hand. I did, and it got old.
What worked better for me was Clever Cleaner. I’ve removed most cleaner apps after a day or two, but I kept this one because it handled the one job I cared about. It scanned my photo library, bundled similar images together, and picked a Best Shot for each set. In my case, the picks were decent more often than I expected. I still checked anything important before deleting, becuase I don’t trust auto-picks with family stuff.
Here’s how I did it.
- Install Clever Cleaner and give it access to your Photos library.
- Open the Similars area.
- Let the scan finish.
- Go through each group, or use Smart Cleanup if you want it to choose for you.
- If the suggested Best Shot looks wrong, tap the photo you want to keep.
- Delete the rest, then clear the Recently Deleted album so the storage space comes back.
While I was already cleaning things up, I used a few of the other tools too.
- Heavies found some giant old videos I forgot were sitting there.
- Video Compression shrank clips I wanted to keep.
- Screenshots dumped years of junk captures into one place, which made them easier to wipe out.
- Lives turned Live Photos into regular photos, and the space savings were bigger than I expected.
- Swipe Mode gave me a fast left or right review flow when I wanted to decide photo by photo.
If you’d rather skip third-party apps, Apple’s built-in tools still help a bit. It’s slower, but I’ve done it.
- Use Search to look up a person, pet, place, object, or event.
- Check photos from the same day, weekend, or trip, since near-duplicates usually come from the same stretch of time.
- Review Burst shots and keep the frame you like most.
- Look through albums like People & Pets, Trips, and Media Types to cut down the mess manually.
So, if your main problem is duplicate-looking photos, Apple Photos felt too manual for me. Clever Cleaner did a better job grouping them first, which saved me the time sink.

Apple’s Photos app is picky here. It does not surface every near-duplicate. On iPhone, the built-in Duplicates album usually finds exact or near-exact matches, not five slightly different shots of the same thing. So you might not be missing anything. The feature is.
A few checks worth doing:
- Make sure iCloud Photos is fully synced. If sync is paused, analysis stalls.
- Keep the phone locked, on Wi-Fi, and charging overnight. Low Power Mode off.
- Check Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos. Turn on Sync this iPhone.
- Free up storage. If your phone is packed, indexing gets flaky.
- Test with recent photos first. iOS often processes newer items sooner.
I disagree a bit with @mikeappsreviewer on one part. Apple Photos is fine for exact duplicates. It’s weak for similar shots. Different problem.
If your goal is similar photos, not duplicate files, use a scanner built for visual matching. Clever Cleaner is one of the better options for this because it groups lookalike images instead of waiting for Apple’s limited duplicate detection. That saves a ton of manual review, especailly with trips, pets, and burst-like batches.

Short version, your iPhone is likely working as designed. The design is the problem.
You’re probably not missing a setting. Apple Photos just isn’t very good at this specific job.
The big confusion is that Duplicates in iPhone Photos is not really a “find all visually similar pictures” tool. It’s mostly for exact dupes or very close matches. - Burst shots often hide inside the Bursts album instead of surfacing as duplicates
- Edited versions of the same image may not get grouped at all

One angle the others barely touched: library state matters more than people think. If a lot of your images are in Shared Library, imported from a computer, or restored from backup recently, Photos can take forever to normalize metadata. In that state, duplicate detection is inconsistent, even when the phone looks “done.”
I slightly disagree with @sognonotturno and @mikeappsreviewer on the overnight-wait advice. Past a certain point, more waiting is usually just more waiting. If the Duplicates album is empty after several full charge cycles, it often means iOS decided those shots are not duplicates.
A few checks I’d do instead:
- Open a handful of those “should match” photos and see if one is edited, HDR, Live Photo, portrait-depth, or different resolution
- Check if they are in Hidden or Recently Deleted, because those can affect what surfaces where
- Confirm Face ID and passcode restrictions are not limiting Hidden album visibility if you filed stuff away
- Try forcing a small test case by duplicating one photo manually and see whether that appears in Duplicates later
That last test tells you whether the feature is broken or just selective.
For actual similar-photo cleanup, Apple’s tool is the wrong tool. Clever Cleaner is useful there because it targets lookalikes, not only exact matches.

Cons:
- you still need to review important groups
- auto-selection is not perfect
- some people won’t want another app touching their library
So I’d frame it like this: if your test duplicates appear, your iPhone is fine and @suenodelbosque is basically right that the limitation is Apple’s matching logic. If even true copies never show up, then you may have a library indexing issue.
