My iPad has gotten really slow with apps taking forever to open, laggy typing, and frequent freezing. I already tried the usual settings changes like background app refresh, storage cleanup, and restarting, but nothing seems to improve the performance. I need help figuring out what else could be causing the slowdown and what steps might actually speed up an iPad that still feels unusable.
What fixed my crashing iPad
I ran into the same mess on my iPad a while back. Tap an app, wait, screen flickers, then boom, back to Home. It felt random at first. It wasn’t.
I checked storage and thought I was fine too. The graph didn’t look maxed out. Turns out iPadOS gets touchy before you hit full.
The storage part fooled me
What got me was this. iPadOS leans on storage harder than most people think. Since iPadOS 16, Apple uses Virtual Memory Swap. So when memory pressure goes up, the system borrows space from storage and treats it like temporary RAM.
If your iPad is sitting above roughly 80 percent used, things start getting ugly. You might still see a few GB free and assume it’s enough. I did. It wasn’t enough on mine. The system needs free room for temp files, swap, and background tasks. Apple says to keep at least 1GB open so the device keeps functioning, but for smooth use, I needed more than bare minimum.
On my iPad, once storage got cramped, the pattern was obvious. Lag first. Then app reloads. Then full crashes.
I tried the usual settings stuff first
I went through the standard cleanup checklist in Settings.
- Turned off Background App Refresh
- Enabled Reduce Motion in Accessibility
- Closed out junk apps I hadn’t used in days
Those steps helped a bit with battery drain and made the UI feel less busy. They did not fix the core issue. If the device is short on working room, these tweaks only soften the symptoms.
What I found after digging
The real problem was hidden junk.
Mine was packed with stuff I wasn’t noticing:
- thousands of screenshots
- accidental burst photos
- duplicate or near-duplicate images
- big screen recordings
- old video files buried in folders
I also cleared Safari cache in Settings, which is still worth doing. Browsing felt a little cleaner after. Storage freed up, but not enough to stop the crashes.
The thing that helped me sort it fast
I don’t trust most cleanup apps. A lot of them are junk, or they bait you in and then lock basic cleanup behind a paywall. I still tried one called Clever Cleaner, mostly because I was out of patience.
What I liked was simple. It showed file sizes clearly, so I wasn’t guessing. I could see what was worth deleting.
A couple parts stood out:
- Heavies tab, which sorted media by size
- Similars tab, which grouped near-matching photos and blurry throwaways
That Heavies view found a 4GB screen recording I had forgoten existed. The Similars section saved the most time. I cleared around 15GB in maybe ten minutes. Also, from what I saw, it processed on-device, which mattered to me because I didn’t want my photos sent off somewhere.
After I pushed storage back under the 80 percent mark, the iPad settled down. The app crashing stopped right away on mine.
If cleanup doesn’t fix it, check the battery next
If your iPad is older, battery wear might be part of it. Apple has said aging batteries struggle with peak power draw, and the system slows itself down to avoid shutdowns.
So if your device is 4 or 5 years old, don’t ignore battery health. In Settings, open Battery and see what apps are draining it. iPads are annoyingly less helpful than iPhones here, since they don’t show Maximum Capacity the same way.
Still, battery age matters. I’ve seen old tablets feel “slow” when the battery was half the story.
One more thing after updates
If you installed a big iPadOS update, give it some time. Mine felt awful for hours after one update. The system does background indexing and cleanup work after installation, and performance tanks while it finishes. For me, it cleared up by the next day.
The order I’d try
- Do a deep storage cleanup first
- Clear Safari cache
- Remove large videos, screenshots, bursts, duplicates
- Restart the iPad
- Check battery usage if the iPad is older
- Wait 24 hours if you recently updated iPadOS
If the device is still freezing or dumping you back to the Home screen, do a force restart. Hold the power button and the home or volume button combo until the Apple logo shows up.
For me, storage was the whole problem. It looked “fine” at a glance. It wasn’t. Once I freed enough space, the iPad stopped acting drunk.
If Settings tweaks did nothing, I’d stop chasing toggles.
@mikeappsreviewer is right about storage pressure, but I’d disagree on one part. If you already cleaned space and the iPad still freezes, the next suspect is software corruption, not more cleanup.
Try this order:
- Check iPad model and iPadOS version. Older chips like A10 and A12 feel rough on newer iPadOS builds.
- Delete one or two worst offender apps, then reinstall them. Safari, TikTok, Notes, and Chrome often pile up junk data.
- Turn off Low Power Mode if it’s on. It slows background work and makes lag feel worse.
- Reset keyboard dictionary. Settings, General, Transfer or Reset, Reset, Reset Keyboard Dictionary. This fixes laggy typing more often than people think.
- Test with 5GB to 10GB free, not 1GB. Below that, iPads get wonky fast.
- Back up, then do a full erase and restore. Set it up as new first, before restoring everything. This is the big one.
If performance is smooth as new, your old backup or app data was the issue. If it’s still slow after a clean setup, you’re looking at aging hardware or battery wear.
Also check Analytics Data in Privacy and Security. If you see the same app crashing over and over, delete it. Easy clue, ppl skip it.
For cleanup, Clever Cleaner is fine for finding giant videos and duplicate photos fast. This Clever Cleaner review for free iPhone storage cleanup explains what it does in plain english. Even though it’s aimed at iPhone, the storage cleanup logic still applies.
If the iPad is 5 to 6 years old, blunt answer, it might be at the end of its useful life. That part sucks, but no setting fixes old silicon.
If the usual toggles did nothing, I’d stop treating this like a “settings” problem and start treating it like either corruption or hardware stress.
@mikeappsreviewer is probly right that storage pressure can wreck performance before the iPad looks full, and @suenodelbosque is right that a clean restore can expose whether the issue is software. Where I slightly disagree is this: people jump to “old iPad = hopeless” a little too fast. I’ve seen some older iPads feel way better after killing one bad app or fixing Safari/WebKit weirdness.
A few things I’d try that weren’t already covered much:
- Check if the lag happens everywhere, or only when online. If typing lag and freezing are worse in Safari or cloud-heavy apps, network issues can fake “slow iPad” symptoms.
- Remove VPNs, ad blockers, and profile-based security apps for a day. Those can absolutely bog down web views and app launches.
- Open Files app and look for giant local Downloads folders. People forget that one.
- Disable browser tab hoarding. Safari with 300 tabs is chaos.
- Unpair Bluetooth keyboards/accessories temporarily. Weird input lag sometimes comes from that, not the iPad itself.
- Check free space after syncing media from Messages. Huge message attachments can keep respawning.
If your Photos library is the mess, Clever Cleaner is actually useful for finding duplicates, blurry shots, and giant videos faster than digging through Albums by hand. This quick clip explains it better: see how Clever Cleaner speeds up photo and storage cleanup in 30 seconds
Big test: back it up, erase it, set it up as new, then install only 2 or 3 apps. If it still stutters, that’s the answer. Aging hardware or battery issues, plain and simple. If it runs fine, your old data was the problem. That test saves a ton of guesswork tbh.
I’d add one angle the others barely touched: heat and failing accessories.
If the iPad gets warm during basic stuff like typing or opening Notes, that’s a clue the system is stuck on a process, not just “slow.” Put it on charge, disconnect every accessory, remove the case, turn WiFi and Bluetooth off for 10 minutes, then test offline in a built-in app like Pages or Notes. If it suddenly feels normal, the lag is being triggered by sync, a keyboard, Pencil, VPN, or some flaky Bluetooth device.
I also slightly disagree with going straight to restore for everyone. Before that, check this:
- Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data
- Look for repeated panic, jetsam, or the same app name over and over
- If it is always one app or service, that narrows it down fast
Another sneaky cause is widgets. A bad widget stack can hammer the Home Screen constantly. Remove all widgets for a day and see if freezing improves.
And if touch lag is weird only while charging, test a different cable/brick. Cheap or failing chargers cause ghost input and stutter more often than people admit.
On cleanup tools, Clever Cleaner is decent if Photos/videos are the mess.
Pros:
- fast at finding large media
- good for duplicates and blurry shots
- simpler than digging through Photos manually
Cons:
- mostly useful if storage clutter is your actual problem
- less helpful for system-level bugs
- some people prefer manual control instead of auto-grouping
That lines up with what @mikeappsreviewer, @suenodelbosque, and @viajantedoceu were circling around, but I’d test heat, widgets, accessories, and charging behavior before the nuclear reset. If the iPad is still laggy offline in a clean built-in app, then yeah, you’re probably down to restore, battery aging, or old hardware.
