I accidentally left Live Photo on during a big event and now I have hundreds of iPhone pictures saved that way. I need a fast way to turn off Live Photo in bulk without editing each photo one by one. Looking for the easiest method to save time and free up storage.
I ran into this a while back. I looked through my library and noticed I’d been saving Live Photos for years, even though I almost never played the motion part. I wanted the photos, not the extra clip attached to each one.
Apple’s built-in option worked, sort of. I tried duplicating them as stills and then removing the Live versions. Fine for ten photos. Miserable for a few hundred. I quit pretty fast.
What worked for me was Clever Cleaner. I opened it, went to the Lives section, and it pulled every Live Photo from my phone into one place. No digging through albums. No guessing what was Live and what wasn’t.
Here’s what I did:
- Open the Lives tab
- Sort by size if you want the biggest space hogs first
- Pick the Live Photos you want changed
- Tap Compress
- Check the new still-photo versions
- Remove the original Live Photos after you confirm everything looks right
One thing I liked, it showed the storage savings before I started. Then after the conversion it asked what to do with the originals, so I wasn’t worried about deleting something by mistake.
I kept using the app after I finished this part. The Live Photo cleanup was only one piece of it. I went through Similars to wipe out duplicate shots, Heavies to find old huge videos I forgot were sitting there, and Screenshots to clear years of junk captures. If I’m honest, those three cleaned out more storage than the Live Photos did.
Also, if you don’t want this mess again, turn Live Photos off in the Camera app. Open Camera, tap the Live Photos icon near the top, the little circles icon, and make sure it’s crossed out. Then go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings and turn on preservation for Live Photos. If you skip that, iOS sometimes flips it back on and you end up collecting more of them without noticing. I missed this the first tiem.
So yeah, the fix for me was simple. Convert the Live Photos into still images, delete the originals once you’ve checked them, then stop the camera from making new Live Photos going forward. After I did that, the issue was done.

If you want bulk, Photos app is weak here. It lets you turn off Live on one photo, or copy a still out of a Live Photo, but doing hundreds is a slog.
I partly disagree with @mikeappsreviewer on one thing. Storage savings from Live Photos add up faster than people think. A still HEIC might be 1 to 3 MB. A Live Photo often lands around 3 to 8 MB, sometiems more. With 500 shots, that gap gets ugly fast.
Fastest route I’ve seen is Clever Cleaner. It groups all Live Photos in one place, so you don’t have to hunt through your library. Then you convert them to stills in batches and remove the originals after you check them. Way less painful than Apple’s own workflow.

Then stop it from happening again. Camera app, tap the Live icon off. Settings, Camera, Preserve Settings, keep Live Photo setting saved. Otherwise iOS likes to be annoying and flip it back.
Honestly, I’d split this into two goals: remove the Live part fast, and avoid wrecking your originals by doing somethng irreversible.
I slightly disagree with @mikeappsreviewer and @mike34 on one point. I would not start deleting anything right away just because the app shows previews. With hundreds of event photos, I’d test on 20 first. Live Photos sometimes pick a different key frame than the one you expected, and that can be annoyng if people are blinking.
If you want bulk handling, Clever Cleaner is still probably the easiest route because it rounds up the Live Photos without you manually hunting through the Photos app. That’s the real win. Not just storage, but time.
Another option, if you use a Mac, is exporting selected Live Photos as still images from Photos/Image Capture in batches, then re-importing. It’s clunkier, but some people prefer keeping total control instead of using an app.

My take:
- If you want fastest: use Clever Cleaner
- If you want safest: test a small batch first
- If you want no app: Mac export workaround, but it’s a pain
And yeah, after this, turn Live off permanently in camera settings or iPhone will happily do this to you agian.
I’m a little less sold on the Mac export workaround than @espritlibre. It works, but for hundreds from one event, that’s the kind of “manual but technically batch” job that still eats your evening.
What I’d do is split this into two questions:
- Do you want to keep the exact current key photo?
- Or do you just want the motion part gone fast?
That matters because bulk conversion can sometimes choose a frame you didn’t intend. @mike34 was right to focus on speed, but I’d be careful with event shots where expressions matter.
If you want the least painful iPhone-only option, Clever Cleaner is probably the most practical middle ground.
Pros of Clever Cleaner:
- Finds Live Photos in one place
- Bulk actions save a lot of tapping
- Useful if storage is part of the problem too
- Easier than fighting the Photos app
Cons:
- You still need to review results before deleting originals
- Bulk tools can make bulk mistakes if you rush
- Some people won’t want a third-party app touching their photo library
My suggestion: do a 25-photo test batch first, especially for group shots. If the stills look right, then do the rest. If not, you may be better off keeping some Lives and only converting the obvious ones.
Also, one thing not mentioned enough: if these are important event photos, make a backup before any cleanup. Fast is good. Rebuilding memories is not.
